Nice and Fried: More French/Italian cuisine

For our last full day to travel in France, Pat and I day-tripped to Nice, a mere 40 kilometers (25 miles) from the Italian border. So close to my old stomping ground (don’t we love how 4 months drinking and being a tourist with other American college students studying and immersing myself in another culture, gives you ownership over a country?)

Pat and I decided it was safe to order pizza once we were in Corsica a few days earlier. The island is closer to Italy and their “dialect” is essentially Italian. And I basked in all of their prosciutto glory as well.

But then we went to Nice, where food specialties are pizza, pasta and fried vegetables in addition to the Nicoise salad. We, again, took the recommendation of Lonely Planet, as I like to make well-researched decisions, and had lunch at Restaurant du Jesu, in Nice’s cutesy/lively/touristy old town. 8-10 euro prices, nicoise beignets (fried eggplant, zucchini, and artichokes), pizzas and homemade pastas; the description had me at 8-10 euro.

Pat and I split the beignets for an entree, followed by pizza for pat and polenta with tomatoes, mushrooms and cheese for me. Would you even doubt this meal could disappoint? It didn’t matter that the food was sizzling and we were already fried from the 30 plus Celsius weather (not quite the 105 F Philadelphia and the east coast just endured, but HAWT as we all know). Just give us a shaded indoor table, a carafe du l’eau and we will revel in our Italian inspired dishes.

Throw in a free visit to the Matisse museum (which has the original sketches for the Barnes Foundation’s mural-what up Philadelphia), some window shopping and a brief history lesson from a tour bus, and I would say we had a successful day trip to Nice. The only things I would do differently if I could go back, would be to hit up the other art museums, and bask on the pebble beach for an afternoon. Preferably while staying in a cliff side villa…
